Background/Introduction: Aurora Medical Center Grafton Resource Nurses noted high volumes of requests to assist with peripheral intravenous catheter placements. Between January - October 2021, 868 requests were made for intravenous catheters to be placed by other resources. This data was brought to the nursing professional development team for evaluation. A significant need for directed efforts to grow nurse competency was identified. This included increased confidence in basic insertion skills and training nurses for complex placements utilizing ultrasound guidance. Purpose or Objective: Create a professional development program to increase nurse confidence with basic peripheral intravenous insertion skills and increase nurses trained for ultrasound-guided insertion. Method or Evaluation: An education program consisting of three competency pathways was developed. The nurses selected their pathway based on self-reflected confidence level, skill, and years of experience. Pre-education included computer-based training in preparation of the pathway selected. In-person workshops were developed for both basic and ultrasound-guided insertion skills. After attending, nurses were required to apply skills learned and provide documentation of 2-5 successful insertions. Results or Findings: Pre-data (2021) showed 434 requests over 5 months. Over the first 5 months of 2023, 207 requests were made revealing a 52% decrease in requests. Ultrasound-guided trained nurses increased from 47 to 64. Teammate testimonies were received. One shared, “… I stuck it on my first try! I credit the workshop and the time you allowed me to practice! It gave me the confidence and refresher needed! I greatly appreciate your time, guidance, and support!” Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Aurora Medical Center Grafton continues to track sustainment by trending placement requests. Basic intravenous insertion skills are intentionally focused on during new nurse orientation as well. An escalation algorithm and job-aide were created to provide additional guidance on technique, resources, and when to escalate placement needs to another resource.
