Abstract
Perioperative renal function is an important aspect to consider for anesthesiologists, as the kidneys are responsible for or are involved in a number of essential functions. These include solute regulation and transport, intravascular osmolality and water balance, excretion of the end products of metabolism and drugs, neurohumoral functions, hematopoiesis, and bone remodeling. Renal function is typically evaluated through a combination of laboratory physiologic parameters. Those parameters in turn can be used to determine the location of the renal dysfunction. Consequently, the metabolism of many medications is correlated with renal function, and understanding their relationship is important in the perioperative care of a patient.
