Fetal autopsy and cardiac registry

Abstract

The first component of this chapter will deal with the fetal, perinatal, and pediatric autopsy, concluding with a discussion of the importance of cardiac archives, historically, in the present time, and moving forward. This discussion will also demonstrate how the two topics are intertwined, and somewhat dependent on one another along with the importance of retrospective study of both the normal and the congenitally malformed heart. There have been many clinical advances over the years in all medical modalities, the majority of these fueled by basic scientific concepts, innovation, specialization, and increased communication between many specialized medical cohorts. Hopefully, this chapter will allow clinicians, who take care of the living patient or unborn fetus, to understand the importance of the autopsy and what detailed information it can provide. Special attention will be given to the cardiac portion of the autopsy.
