Augustana Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, IL: This book was compiled in 1998 by Augustana Alumnae. Part 1 includes a summary of "The History of the Augustana Hospital School of Nursing from 1884-1938" written in 1938. Part 2 includes the nursing school history from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. It is filled with images of nursing students and stories of their training and their time working in the hospital. Part 3 includes a poems written by alumni. Part 4 includes a listing of missionaries and Augustana graduates.
From the Epilogue: Augustana Hospital was taken over by Lutheran General Health Systems in 1987 and renamed Lutheran General Hospital - Lincoln Park. The hospital closed December 8, 1989. Some of the Augustana Hospital Chapel windows were moved to and dedicated at the A.D. Johnson Memorial Chapel of Lutheran General Hospital on December 5, 1991.

During the tumultuous growth of Chicago prior to World War I, Augustana Hospital purchased the tract of land located at Dickens and Sedgwick, seeking to build a new and much larger hospital. Construction was delayed by the First World War, a time when many physicians and nurses left to serve in the war effort, and those remaining struggled to take care of Chicago citizens who continued to be plagued by epidemics. In the mid 1920s, the new hospital was finally completed, and was dedicated by Gustav Adolf, the Crown Prince of Sweden. It was a model of its day, with seven floors of patient rooms and modem operating and treatment facilities. The hospital thrived as a patient care and teaching institution, led by famed physicians such as Drs. Albert Ochsner, Nelson Percy, and Rudolph Oden, who supervised interns and residents and also taught at the Rush University and University of Illinois Medical Schools and County Hospital.

The arrival of the Second World War presented more challenges, with decreased staffing and resources, as major contributions to the war effort were made by the Augustana medical and nursing staffs serving in the war zones and at home. Postwar, the hospital flourished and added a new patient wing to expand to 330 beds with a physician staff of 250 physicians, including all of the medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. In the late 1950s, Augustana inaugurated one of the first cardiac surgery programs in Chicago.

Originally named the Deaconess Institute of the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church, Augustana Hospital opened its doors in the converted home of Rev. Carlsson on May 15, 1884, with 15 beds. The first patient was a young woman who came to attend the dedication and broke her leg while stepping from a cable car. She was treated by Augustana's first physician, Dr. Truman Miller. Late in 1884, this building burned, and a new three story frame hospital housing 26 beds was completed in early 1885.

As its 1884 building became increasingly crowded and epidemics increased in Chicago more space was needed. Augustana Hospital built a 125 bed institution which opened in 1892 at what was called Presidents' Comer, the intersection of Garfield (now Dickens), Lincoln, and Cleveland Avenues. North and east wings were added in 1903 and 1904.
