Abstract
The open art therapy studio through Advocate Aurora Health recently restarted in-person groups as well as a co-occurring online option for those unwilling to return to the hospital setting. A wide scope of supplies is available for participants, allowing them to engage in artmaking of any style. The authors designed a three-part featured process involving mask making to explore identity, persona, relationships, and cultural heritage. Participants in the open art therapy studio include individuals and families ranging in age from ten to 70 years old. Participants include patients hospitalized with medical conditions, persons with a variety of disabilities, hospital staff and caregivers, and individuals with mental health challenges. This chapter reports on participant engagement, stages of the mask-making process, emotional and evolving highlights of insight and healing, variations of creations, and features of interactions with the completed masks.
