How to develop an educator’s portfolio

Abstract

Educators seeking career advancement and academic promotion must provide documentation that they have achieved the academic standards and expectations for faculty as scholars. This documentation must demonstrate clear goals, adequate preparation, appropriate methods, significant results, effective presentation, and reflective critique. In medicine, professional societies and academic institutions have recommended standards and evaluation metrics associated with these criteria to render judgments specific to faculty promotion. The educator’s portfolio is often the document used to communicate excellence in education when preparing for appointment, reappointment, or promotion. This chapter will use these six criteria as a framework to discuss how to develop and present an educator’s portfolio.
