Abstract
Electrocardiogram (ECG) strip interpretation and subsequent intervention is a crucial concept for nurses as it plays a vital role in providing safe and effective patient care. Modern learners seek the opportunity for on demand and interactive educational opportunities. Literature demonstrates that integrating gamification in education increases learner knowledge, interest, and engagement. Current technology leveraged to develop an interactive, self-paced case study game to promote rhythm identification and intervention. Pictures of supplies used in practice and a video of mock defibrillation were utilized to reinforce understanding. Scenarios unfolded as the learner progressed. Incorrect answers directed nurses back to the question to allow them to identify the correct answer. Pregame nurse confidence was reported as 3.33 out of 5.0, with an increase in confidence to 4.22 post-game. Every nurse indicated the game was beneficial to learning. Qualitative feedback stated this method was interactive, fun and a profound knowledge refresher that helped apply ECG knowledge to real-life scenarios. Nurses asked for additional rhythms, including heart blocks, presented in a similar format. By harnessing the power of games, educators can create engaging and effective learning experiences to prepare nurses to interpret rhythms confidently and accurately in practice. Gamification creates a more dynamic and memorable learning environment versus a traditional classroom learning approach.
