Presentation Notes

Professional Development poster presentation at Empowering Nursing Excellence: Recognizing the Value and Impact of Nurses, Advocate Health Midwest Region Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference 2023; November 15, 2023; virtual.

Abstract

Background/Introduction:

In 2022, approximately 15,000 Registered nurses and 6,000 Nursing assistants were onboarded utilizing paper checklists across 26 hospitals. The 95 identified checklists required printing multiple pages and was cumbersome for leadership to monitor and access.

Purpose or Objective:

Nursing Education and Professional Development launched an electronic orientation checklist initiative. The checklists transitioned to electronic platform delivering an updated, comprehensive, and collaborative approach to system orientation resources. This provides secure access, guarantees timely check off, offers real-time support to teammates, cost savings and fosters ecological consciousness.

Method:

Electronic checklists were piloted at two sites. Feedback from stakeholders, including executive leadership, supported implementation across the Midwest region with a detailed timeline plan. Virtual webinars, information sessions and leader meetings were held to support the transition. Learning modules were created and included in the new teammate online orientation. Centralized location was created to house implementation resources. Surveys were administered to evaluate effectiveness and garner feedback.

Results:

Sixty-seven electronic checklists were migrated. Over 1000 leaders and educators attended education sessions. Leader feedback was positive regarding ease of use and review of teammate progress. Likewise, preceptors and teammates reported the electronic checklists were better than paper. With the elimination of only two paper checklists, the organization can potentially save $1.1 million and influence environmental stewardship. Although cost savings were substantial, the most transformational impact is increased interdepartmental collaborative efforts.

Conclusion/Implications for Practice:

The department leveraged an existing platform at no additional cost to create a secure, streamlined electronic orientation checklist across the organization spanning two states. Since it is an evolutionary implementation, design monitoring and assessment of technology literacy is needed to influence the overall learning experience. A continued collaborative approach including timed content revisions and an expanded online orientation repository will continue to promote safe practice, standardization, cost savings and significant environmental impact.
