Abstract
Background
Quality improvement project to determine if utilizing quick response (QR) codes for the Magnet Outcomes Boards, improves knowledge and confidence for nurses in speaking to The Big Three: nursing sensitive indicators, nursing satisfaction and patient satisfaction. Implementing an innovative strategy to engage frontline nurses with data.
Local Problem
Surveyed frontline nurses showed a gap in knowledge and confidence level in speaking to The Big Three Important for nurses to be well versed regarding data reported because it is the reflection of knowledge, wisdom, as well as understanding of the impact of nursing care within the organization.
Method
A pre and post survey to determine the impact of using QR codes on knowledge and confidence level for nurses regarding The Big Three on the Outcome Boards. A 5 -question survey using Likert scales was developed by nurses in shared governance. The scripts for the QR Codes were developed, filmed, using a cartoon character filter in the SnapChat, and converted into a QR Code for just-in-time education.
Results/Conclusions
Baseline data demonstrated that of the 96 respondents, nurses rated their knowledge on the following at above average: nursing sensitive indicators 13.5%, patient satisfaction 17.9% and nursing satisfaction 19.5%. 13.8% rated their confidence level at above average.
After the implementation of the QR codes nurses’ knowledge and confidence improved related to The Big Three. Nurses rated their knowledge on the following at above average: Nursing sensitive indicators 18.8%, patient satisfaction 30% and nursing satisfaction 30%. When asked about their unit outcomes, 37.5% rated their confidence level at above average.
Implications for Practice
Providing staff nurse with the resources for understanding their hospital and unit goals allows them to reflect on how their daily practice can positively make an impact. Understanding, not just knowing, the impact of data is what distinguishes an exemplary nurse.
