Presentation Notes

Quality Improvement poster presentation at Empowering Nursing Excellence: Recognizing the Value and Impact of Nurses, Advocate Health Midwest Region Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference 2023; November 15, 2023; virtual.

Abstract

Background: Research has shown the “gamification” method of learning appeals to the modern-day learner. Combing technology and tactile experiences have proven to increase knowledge retention and begin building muscle memory. Evidence has also displayed a positive impact in decreasing unfavorable events such as hospital acquired conditions.

Purpose: At a Midwest quaternary medical center, new nursing team members represent the majority in inpatient units. Due to limited preceptors and growing staffing challenges, there is added pressure for new inpatient nurses to complete the orientation process as competently and quickly as possible to provide safe patient care and improve staffing ratios. New nursing team members identified needing additional practical experiences with preventing and/or seeing hospital acquired infections and quality improvement related to c difficile, central line care, falls, pressure injury prevention, and catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Thus, a team of clinical nurse specialists and nursing professional development nurses created interactive learning experiences utilizing gameshow and escape room style education called “The Ultimate NSI Showdown.”

Evaluation: Sessions include gamification of selected topics, electronic health record documentation, resources (policies), site specific initiatives, and debriefing. This new educational approach is offered twice a month and required for 4 selected pilot units of inpatient nurses and nursing assistants. Attendance is tracked along with baseline knowledge assessment prior to the session and a post knowledge evaluation.

Results/Conclusions:Since program inception in January 2023, 8 showdowns have occurred with 40 nurses and 19 nursing assistants/techs completing the training. Comparison of baseline knowledge to post session showed an overall increase in knowledge of 36% for NA/techs and 37% for nurses.

Implications for Practice: The interactive learning experience will continue to occur 2x/month for new staff as a supplement to orientation. Pilot unit NSI data may be analyzed in conjunction with all staff completing the training and additional areas of opportunity evaluated on an ongoing basis.
