Abstract
Background
Global health competencies are expanding in many undergraduate nursing programs. Many nurses pursue and volunteer in global health initiatives before and after graduation. In addition, many clinical institutions have international clinical programs. This interest, cultivated in nursing schools, may contribute to a student’s desire to continue involvement in global opportunities throughout their professional career.
Purpose
As part of a study looking at factors informing new graduate nurses employment decisions, the purpose of this study was to understand new nurse graduates past involvement with global health and their current interest in global health opportunities after graduation.
Method
A Cross-sectional survey of new graduate nurses and senior nursing students was conducted. Nursing students from five regional nursing programs were invited to participate in April 2023. New graduate nurses employed in the health system were invited to complete the online survey within the first two weeks of their orientation between June and August of 2023. Descriptive statistics were used to describe participation and interest in global health programs.
Results
236 newly graduated registered nurses (37% response rate) and 33 nursing students completed the survey. 22% reported global health opportunities in nursing school with greater opportunities in BSN programs. Ten percent of nurses had participated in some form of global health program. Over 56% of responding nurses expressed interest in global health opportunities after graduation and 30% agreed that the presence of global health opportunities may influence their decision to work at an organization.
Implications for Practice
The Office of Global Health offers a certification program and opportunities for nurses in global health. Opportunities include medical trips abroad, information resources, and networking. Global opportunities may be of interest to potential new hires. Efforts to expand opportunities to practicing nurses and advertise these opportunities should be considered.
