Abstract

Telemetry education continues to emerge as a recurring need on nursing needs assessments. Nursing professional development specialists are frequently asked to expand educational offerings to accommodate a wide range of practice settings beyond a single facility. However, traditional in-person strategies present logistical challenges, including space limitations, facilitator availability, and associated costs. To address these barriers, a creative, cost-effective solution was developed using an internal web-based platform.

This new approach delivers high-quality telemetry education through a self-paced online course featuring multimedia content, quizzes, and interactive practice exercises. The flexible format allows learners to access and resume the course at their convenience, aligning with the needs of modern adult learners. It also eliminates enrollment caps and extends reach across multiple practice settings.

A literature review supported the use of web-based learning as an effective modality for telemetry education. Financial analysis revealed significant cost savings, reducing per-person expenses from $179.58 for in-person classes to $93.10 for the online version. In the first quarter post-launch, 75 nurses completed the course, earning a total of 166.5 approved continuing education hours. Post-course evaluations showed that 93% of participants reported increased telemetry knowledge, and the program achieved a 92.9% return on investment compared to in-person delivery.

This model demonstrates that online education can effectively address widespread clinical learning needs while optimizing resources. Given the positive outcomes in cost savings, accessibility, and learner satisfaction, this web-based strategy will continue to be implemented. Future evaluation of traditional in-person programs is recommended to determine additional opportunities for leveraging technology to improve knowledge acquisition and financial efficiency in nursing professional development initiatives.
