Abstract
Preceptor programs are crucial for developing new team members and ensuring high-quality patient care. However, variations in training programs often lead to inconsistent experiences for preceptees, which can result in unclear expectations and inadequate preparation (McKinney et al., 2020). Standardizing preceptor training can reduce turnover, improve patient outcomes, and create a more efficient healthcare system (Kosanke et al., 2023).
Preceptors play a crucial role in teaching skills, fostering critical thinking, clinical judgment, prioritization, and handling difficult conversations. Developing effective communication skills for multi-generational teams is key to creating an inclusive environment. Equipping preceptors with tools to guide their teammates through challenging conversations can enhance emotional intelligence and communication skills.
The educational program consists of a three-hour session combining a PowerPoint presentation, interactive discussions, and three simulations with debriefing. It is designed to improve preceptors’ skills in providing constructive feedback, developing emotional intelligence, and resolving conflicts. This training is suitable for preceptors of all experience levels, ensuring they are equipped to effectively support their preceptees and foster a positive and inclusive environment.
Evaluation of the program showed significant improvements in preceptor confidence. Pre-simulation, 81.8% of participants were somewhat confident in teaching critical thinking skills; post-simulation, 90% were confident. Knowledge of resources jumped from 27.3% to 90%, comfort in giving constructive feedback increased from 11.1% to 55.6%, and comfort in teaching conflict resolution improved from 18.2% to 70%. These results underscore the program’s effectiveness in enhancing preceptor capabilities.
Feedback from the simulation course praised the training for offering valuable communication tools, with comments like "great format for difficult conversations" and "real-life scenarios." These positive results indicate that standardized preceptor simulation course enhances preceptor confidence and effectiveness, ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience for new teammates.
