Abstract
Background: The Oncology Unit experienced very low nurse and team member engagement and unexpected high turnover of the team in a short time. A new leadership approach was implemented by interim nurse leaders.
Objective: Leaders implemented numerous strategies to increase engagement and reduce turnover.
Method: Interim Nurse Leaders including Clinical Nurse Manager, Assistant Clinical Nurse Manager and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse implemented strategies including team member communication, visibility and approachability, hiring and onboarding practices, and team building and development.
Evaluation: These strategies were implemented to transform the Oncology unit culture and patient care experience.
Results: Post implementation the unit experienced an increase in team member engagement, increased nurse retention and an increase in patient experience scores.
Discussion: This roadmap was previously utilized in a similar unit by the same leaders who were able to replicate high retention, strong team member engagement, and excellent patient experience in the Orthopedic Unit.
Implications for practice: In addition, the utilization of these core leadership strategies can be applied to many different teams to replicate its success.
