Identifying risk of financial toxicity in newly diagnosed patients with cancer

Abstract

This quality improvement project implemented and evaluated a program designed to identify newly diagnosed patients with cancer who are at risk for financial toxicity in a rural oncology clinic setting. This project used a pre–post design to evaluate a financial toxicity screening program with referrals to a lay financial navigator using the Comprehensive Score for financial Toxicity assessment. Patients scoring 22 or lower were referred to a lay financial navigator who provided assessment and support to mitigate financial toxicity. This article demonstrates the need to address and improve financial well-being in patients with cancer.
