63. Drug-drug binding

Abstract

This chapter discusses the main concept of drug-drug binding, defining the key elements of drug-drug interaction such as affinity, potency, different types of dose-response curves, etc. Knowledge of whether the drug is a full or partial agonist, and whether antagonism is competitive or noncompetitive is requisite prior to drug administration. Furthermore, the pharmacodynamic profile of a drug is an important variable when evaluating concentration-dependent effects of that drug. Being aware of pharmacodynamic drug-drug interactions, based on drug-drug binding and different types of synergism and antagonism, is an essential part of anesthesia practice.
